Union Pacific Steam Engine #844

Union Pacific 844 is a steam locomotive of the Northern type, or the 4-8-4 configuration of wheels. It was built in 1944 and was the last steam engine delivered to the Union Pacific Railroad. UP 844 was saved from scrapping in 1960 and since 1962 has been used for special excursion trips. This engine was featured in the PBS show “Shining Time Station” (better known for Thomas the Tank Engine) and in the music video of “Last Train Home” by the Pat Metheny Group.

We were lucky to see the UP 844 when it pulled into Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri on July 4 in 2007. It is remarkable to see a piece of history that close.
